William Tillyer: The Mulgrave Tensile Wire Works
28 Sep - 11 Nov 2023 Bernard Jacobson Gallery presents The Mulgrave Tensile Wire Works by British artist William Tillyer, alongside his Scalby Suite and Study for a Constructed Painting series. This exhibition presents Tillyer’s reinvention of the traditional still life genre. The first series, the Mulgrave Tensile Wire Works (2021-22), are painted on wire mesh deconstructing the conventional relationship between medium and support. The second series, the Scalby Suite etchings (2022), demonstrate Tillyer’s skill as a printmaker while including his distinctive grid motif. The final series on display are the watercolours, Study for a Constructed Painting (2023), which reveal Tillyer as the colourist and simultaneously exhibits the unifying structure of the grid. 29 Mar - 4 May 2023 Bernard Jacobson Gallery presents a selection of paintings by the German artist Bernd Koberling (b. 1938). This occasion marks Koberling's first exhibition in the UK since the 1980s, when the Royal Academy of Arts organised A New Spirit in Painting (1981) and German Art in the 20th Century (1985). Stainless steel wires strung across a metal frame and held in tension by turnbuckles support geometrically shaped areas of metal mesh, woven through with paint reflecting the colours of the North Yorkshire landscape, where the artist has lived for most of his life. Prints I wish I had published
11 Jan - 9 Feb 2019 In 1969 Bernard Jacobson opened his first London gallery – a fourth-floor walk-up on Mount Street, Mayfair, dealing in prints by international stars, including Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg, as well as publishing prints by leading British artists including Malcolm Morley and Robyn Denny. Printmaking fit the radical, pop sensibility of the time, and Jacobson was part of that heady explosion of interest in the medium. As the gallery approaches its half century in 2019, it is fitting that this landmark year opens with an ambitious two-part exhibition exploring Jacobson's personal and abiding love of prints and some of the remarkable works published by the gallery during an eventful 50 years in the business. Harold Cohen: New Paintings
8 Apr - 7 May 2011 Harold Cohen acquired a major reputation in the 1960s as a painter and leading figure in the new London scene and represented the UK at the 1966 Venice Biennale, documenta 5, and in museum shows throughout the world. In 1968, he moved to California, where he served as professor and then as chair in the newly formed visual arts department of the University of California, San Diego. There, he turned his attention to computing and quickly built a second reputation as a pioneer in the application of computing to the arts. Read more -

3 - 28 Mar 2009 This exhibition sees the grouping of recent work by Larry Bell, Joe Goode, William Tillyer, and Marc Vaux. All four were born in the 1930s - Bell and Goode prominent figures in the Los Angeles scene since passing through the Chouinard Art Institute in the early 1960s, Vaux and Tillyer having settled in London and Yorkshire respectively, after studying at the Slade, also in the early 1960s. 4 - 28 Feb 2009 The works on display at Bernard Jacobson Gallery date from across Ben Nicholson's distinguished career and range from his fully abstract white reliefs to his later pencil drawings of architectural ruins. Robert Motherwell: Five Great Opens
15 Oct - 22 Nov 2008 From 15th October, Bernard Jacobson Gallery will stage the most significant exhibition of Robert Motherwell's work in England since his 1978 Royal Academy retrospective, organised by Norman Rosenthal. William Tillyer: The Cadiz Caprices

Harold Cohen: Colour Rules
9 Jul - 15 Aug 2008 Harold Cohen's new works represent the most recent stage of a project in evolution since 1972, when he seemingly abandoned his distinguished painting career in favour of computer programming. Joe Goode: DONTNO

Pia Fries: Painted Tongues

Larry Poons: New Paintings
12 Sep - 10 Oct 2007 Larry Poons' current works are large canvases covered with an incredible armoury of different small brush marks. Although abstract, they bring to mind associations with Post-Impressionist painters such as Édouard Vuillard and Georges Seurat. The exhibition is in celebration of Poons' 70th birthday. 6 - 29 Jun 2007 This June, Bernard Jacobson Gallery is pleased to present a new group of works by the Los Angeles artist Larry Bell. The exhibition will feature new glass cubes, each unique, measuring 15 inches cubed. As well as these glass cubes, we will also be exhibiting a large-scale four-panel glass sculpture. Read more -
Marc Vaux: Colour Edge to Edge, Paintings from the mid '60s
4 May - 2 Jun 2007 In the mid-1960s Marc Vaux became aware that his primary interest in painting was colour in its purest sense. Prior to this point, his work had been predominantly concerned with the structure of painting, combining hard edge and gestural paintwork in one canvas. The exhibition will consists of six paintings, most of which have not been seen since the 1960s, along with a group of preparatory drawings in black and white and colour. Read more -
Ben Nicholson
9 Jan - 3 Feb 2007 Ben Nicholson is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in the development of British abstraction. This exhibition will include paintings and drawings from all periods of his life, starting with the drawing Cafe Robinson, St Remy from the early thirties, going through to a White Relief from 1936 and then the hard edged geometrical paintings of the early forties.
