Shirley Kaneda is an abstract painter and artist based in New York City. Kaneda was born and raised in Japan and moved to New York in 1970 to study art at Parsons School of Design. Her art explores the evolving possibilities of abstract painting. Biomorphic and linear forms confront each other in the centre of her vivid compositions. As she experiments with reproduction, repetition, and variation, she invites viewers to reflect on the meaning of her works. Kaneda has received a variety of awards from organisations including the Pollock Krasner Foundation in 1997 and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1999.
