Shirley Kaneda

Shirley Kaneda is a painter living and working in New York. Originally born in Tokyo, Japan, Kaneda studied fine art at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Her work is concerned with similarity and dissimilarity, often reflected in the titles of her works, and with the nature of sensuous experience unique to abstract painting. In her words, they "question what representation is in the abstract." Kaneda's work has been recognized with a number of awards, from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, The Elizabeth Foundation, The Pollock Krasner Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Fellowship. She was an assistant professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University, an associate professor at Claremont Graduate University, and is currently a professor at the Pratt Institute in New York.
