Born in Glasgow, Scotland.

Attended Glasgow School of Art.

1963-65
Attended St. Martin's School of Art.

1965
Abandoned conventional studio production for the creation of impermanent sculptures.

1972
Held a mocking one day retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery.

1985
Honoured with the Mercedes Benz John Moores 1st Painting Prize.
Begins teaching as a Senior Lecturer at Slade College of Art, London.

1988
Completed a public commission for London's Royal Festival Hall.

1990-1996
Visiting Art Lecturer at Rijksacademie, Amsterdam.

1991
Created a public commission for the Royal Museum of Scotland.
Visiting Professor at Real Academie de Bellas Artes, Madrid.

2012
Stepped down from teaching as a Professor of Fine Arts at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he was Head of Graduate Painting.

Present
Lives and works in London.
