Bram Bogart

1921
Born Abraham van den Boogaart on July 12th, Delft, Netherlands.

1933
Registered at Technical School where he learns to be a house painter.

1936
Leaves Technical School and works as a house painter.

1937
Begins work for advertising company, Leo Mineur, in Rotterdam.

1939
Bogart begins his career as a painter, showing his first works at Bennewitz. World War II commences.

1940
Manages to escape “mandatory work” in Germany.

1943
In order to furnish an acceptable excuse to the occupying army, Bogart registers at the Fine Arts Academy in The Hague.

1944
Goes into hiding in Delft but continues to paint.

1946
Hitch-hikes to Paris, he rents a “chamber de bonne”; over the next few years he will move between France and Holland.

1947
Falls ill and returns to Delft where he is hospitalised for several months, in the autumn he returns to France.

1948
Works with direct application of pure colour paint from the tubes and develops a system based on the autonomy of colours.

1950
Moves to Le Cannet, where he experiments for the first time with mixtures of oil and water-based paints. Creates a series of paintings inspired by the buildings of Grimaldi.

1951
Returns to Delft, where the Lamvert Van Meerten Museum devotes an entire exhibition to him. April shows at the Bennewitz Gallery in The Hague.

1954
Oil paintings take on a thickness and the colours become more sober. Paints numerous monochromes in white or black.

1958
Meets Jean Dypréau and Serge Vandercam, which allows him to show his work for the first time in Brussels at the Carabin Gallery, and meets a compatriot, Abelina Sjoukje Vos.

1959
Becomes a regular at the Rosati café, where he meets numerous Italian artists and his compatriot, de Kooning. Like de Kooning, who eventually became an American citizen, he is deeply hostile toward the cultural policy of the Dutch museums.

1960
Moves to Brussels where painters, Van Anderlecht and Jef Verheijen introduce him to art dealer and collector, Han Liechti.

1961
Starts painting in his new workshop, this time the paintings are larger, the colours denser, brighter and the paint continues to thicken.

1962
Marries Abelina Sjouke Vos.

1964
Daughter, Cornelia, born 15 January. Participates in the biennial Guggenheim International Award exhibition.

1965
The thickness of his paintings lessens, and the signs of his early 1950s work reappear. Awarded the 1963-4 Belgian Critics Prize in Charleroi.

1967
Daughter, Inge, born 5 January.

1969
Acquires Belgian citizenship. Awarded the Europa Prize for painting in Ostende.

1971
Birth of his son Bram, 5 April.

1972
Work undergoes a profound change: the matter is not only applied far more directly and playfully, but actually begins to overflow the edges, giving his work their Baroque character.

1974
Because of the recent thickening of the paint, he modifies the way his supports are consolidated, adopting metal stretchers, which in turn leads him to changing his mode of presenting his work.

1977
Monograph written by Manfred de la Motte is published along with exhibition at Marianne Hennemann's gallery. Includes the most important critical texts devoted to his work.

1987
Wins the Jules Raeymaker Prize for colour, awarded by the Royal Academy of Belgium.

1988
The Lannoo printers in Tielt publish a work entitled 'Bram Bogart ou la Fidelité', with a text written by Francine-Claire Legrand.

1992
Liliane Thron-Petit makes the film Bram Bogart for the “Portrait of an Artist” series shown on RTL-TV1 in February.
